Hello, creative souls! I’m excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at my market events in the greater Seattle area. I started participating in local markets the summer of 2023 and it's been a blast ever since. I love connecting with customers and chatting about my work. Whether you're a seasoned vendor or a beginner, I hope you'll find inspiration and useful tips to enhance your market experience.
Setting Up for Success: The Mock-Up
Before I head to any market, preparation is key. A few days before the event, I always do a mock-up setup. This practice allows me to visualize my booth layout, ensure I have all the necessary materials, and troubleshoot any potential issues. Here’s how I go about it:
Space Planning: I measure out the dimensions of my booth space in my living room. This helps me get a realistic sense of how everything will fit.
Display Arrangements: I set up my tables, shelves, and display units just as I would at the market. This includes arranging my art pieces, handcrafted items, and stationery in an appealing manner.
Signage and Pricing: I make sure all my signage is clear and visible, and that every item has a price tag. Attractive signs can draw customers in and provide important information at a glance.
Inventory Check: This is also a great time to check my inventory and ensure I have enough stock of each item. I keep my bestsellers prominently displayed and have backups ready.
Market Day in Seattle: Bringing It All Together
The greater Seattle area is a vibrant hub for artists and crafters, and I love participating in local markets. On the day of the event, my setup usually follows these steps:
Early Arrival: I arrive early to give myself plenty of time to set up without feeling rushed. This also allows me to choose the best spot if it's a first-come, first-served situation.
Efficient Unloading: I organize my items and tools in a way that makes unloading quick and easy. Having a checklist ensures I don’t forget anything important.
Eye-Catching Displays: I arrange my booth to be visually appealing from multiple angles. Height variation, color coordination, and thematic grouping help catch the eye of people passing by. Vertical height set-up is important if you have limited space!
Branding: I make sure to have multiple banners with my business name and business cards readily available for customers to grab. Sometimes I dress up in pink so I can match with my booth!
Tips for Market Beginners
If you’re new to the market scene, here are some tips to help you get started:
Mock-Up Practice: Just like I do, practice setting up your booth at home. This helps you refine your layout and ensures you’re not missing any critical components.
Know Your Audience: Tailor your product selection to the market's audience. Research the event and maybe scope out the event in-person to see what foot traffic is like and the general atmosphere of the event.
Be Organized: Keep your setup organized and clutter-free. Use baskets, trays, and shelves to display your items neatly. Make sure you have clear pricing signs or price tags!
Engage with Customers: Smile, greet people, and be ready to talk about your work. Building a connection with customers can significantly boost your sales.
Have Essentials Handy: Bring essentials like water, snacks, hand sanitizer, and sunblock! Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are also a must.
Have a POS system: I have a square reader that allows me to accept credit cards with a simple tap to pay. This makes my check out process so easy and seamless. Most vendors have this so I highly recommend getting it for your business. You just pay a small transaction fee for every sale but I think it's worth it!
